MEET TIM BAEK

​

Timothy completed his secondary education in Hong Kong, where he obtained IGCSE qualifications and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. He then pursued higher education at the University of St Andrews in the United Kingdom, where he studied English Literature, Philosophy, and Theology. After graduating, he returned to Hong Kong and began his teaching career. He later earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from the University of Sunderland and is now a permanent teacher in Hong Kong.

 

Timothy’s passion for education stems from his deep love of English and literature. His enthusiasm for books initially inspired him to pursue teaching. He adopts a constructivist approach to education, believing that meaningful learning takes place through dialogue and active engagement. What Timothy enjoys most about teaching is witnessing the "lightbulb flash"—the moment when a student truly understands a concept. For him, the ability of students to generate their own questions serves as empirical proof that real learning is taking place.

 

Over the years, Timothy has taught English, Philosophy, and Religious Studies, subjects that align closely with his academic background and teaching philosophy. He is highly experienced in delivering major international curricula, including the IB (Diploma Programme and Middle Years Programme), A-Level, IGCSE, AP, SAT, ACT, IELTS, and Common Entrance Examinations. He is particularly skilled in guiding students through the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Extended Essay components of the IB curriculum. Additionally, Timothy provides support for university applications, helping students craft personal statements and prepare for school interviews.

Outside of teaching, Timothy enjoys engaging in outdoor activities such as running and hiking. He is also passionate about traveling and reading, which allow him to continually broaden his perspective and interests. As a freelance tutor, Timothy brings a fresh, global and entrepreneurial perspective to all his students.
